I must confess that I was not in the market for a diet book. Like everyone else, at this time of year I am looking to drop some weight, but I was not in the market for another diet book. However, one of my local stores ran a promotion that gave me this book practically free and I decided to check it out.
Basically, I classify diet books two ways. Either they espouse some off-The Wall>b wacky fads or they repackage the same information in a new way. My theory about this holds true. There is not a lot of new information in this book. Common sense tells us that we need to lower our calorie intake, move more, eat sensible portions, cut back on sugar and refined foods, drink more water etc. But if we know all of this then why are we still overweight?
Because we need to do all of these things and figure out the things in our lives that are out of whack. That's the premise here and frankly, while its not a new thought, it tends to be one of those things that we can casually pass over and say, "Yeah, yeah, yeah but how do I lose weight?"
We shouldn't underestimate the power of things that seem totally unrelated to our weight(spiritual, financial, relational, etc.) and we have to learn to deal with them in a way other than food, which can take a lot time and effort and most importantly, means that the weight loss isn't going to happen overnight. That section is probably the best part of the book but there are several other worthwhile sections too.
There are ideas for eating sensibly with things that are common and found in most local groceries. It has some recipes which look appetizing, menu plans, ideas for exercise and ideas for working through whatever emotional issues are causing you to overeat.
So in short, no, there really isn't much new here, and while I wasn't in the market for a diet book, I am glad I read this one.
